Triple M Footy’s James Brayshaw and Damian Barrett have torn the AFL’s farcical score review system to shreds, with Damo saying it now causes more howlers than it prevents.

The latest case of “amateur hour” in the beleaguered system’s history came on Saturday when Richmond youngster Jack Higgins was inexplicably denied a goal, despite goal line replays showing St Kilda ruckman Tom Hickey clearly touched the ball over the line.

“It’s actually a situation and a system now that introduces the howler to the equation as we saw on the weekend with that Richmond situation,” Damo said on Triple M’s Rush Hour on Monday.

JB added: “You could have fitted another ball between that ball and the goal line - and the umpire gave it as a goal. So it had to be comprehensive to overturn it, and they overturned it! It’s just ridiculous.”

AFL football operations manager Steve Hocking said that, in denying Higgins the goal, the score reviewer on Saturday had access to vision that wasn’t available to the public, but Damo wasn’t buying that explanation.

“Why would the viewer and the fans be robbed of what the adjudicators are watching? I’m not buying that yet and I’m also keen to see the bits of vision that allowed that person in charge of that situation at that moment make that decision to allow that goal,” Damo said.
