Triple M Footy’s James Brayshaw believes the Brownlow Medal should be moved to the Sunday night before the finals begin.

The AFL introduced a pre-finals bye in 2016 and, for the third season in a row, the lack of footy action has been widely criticised for grinding the momentum heading into the finals to a halt.

The Brownlow Medal count is traditionally held on the Monday night before the grand final, but JB reckons it should be shifted to the bye weekend to fill the void and generate some excitement.

“I think you’ve got to put something in there,” JB told Triple M’s Rush Hour on Monday.

“I would move that (Brownlow) to the Sunday of this weekend and so I’d have the big build-up to the Brownlow, I’d have four o’clock the red carpet (with guests) starting to arrive and then six o’clock it starts.

“It (the bye weekend) has got to have a big marquee event and the other thing with that is it allows the Brownlow Medallist, if it is (from) one of the two grand final teams, not to worry about that because it’s before the finals even start.

“I’d look to bring something into this week ... you’ve got two whole days and nights of no presence.”
