Hawthorn youngster James Cousins will likely miss the rest of the season.

He will need surgery on his shoulder, after injuring it in last week's VFL clash.

Miraculously, he played out the game, racking up 24 disposals and a goal in Box Hill's loss to Williamstown.

Hawthorn's general manager of football operations Jason Burt confirmed the injury on Friday.

“Cuz managed to play out the rest of the game, which is a testament to his toughness and determination to help the team,” he told hawthornfc.com.au.

“Unfortunately, he’s going to have surgery on that shoulder, and he will miss a chunk of the season.

“He’s a great kid and a promising footballer, so we want to make sure his body is 100 per cent right going forward.”

Cousins made his AFL debut this season, stringing together three games after being drafted with pick 46 in last year's rookie draft.
