North Melbourne defender Jamie Macmillan has revealed that he lives with a rare condition called ‘cluster headaches’ that can keep him out of action for up to 6-8 weeks.

Macmillan spoke about the condition on The Sunday Rub today:

Cluster headaches are described by the Migraine Trust as “one of the most painful conditions known to mankind”, and affect around 1 per 1000 people.

The headaches come in clusters, occurring at roughly the same time every day for six to eight weeks or sometimes even up to a year.

The pain is intense and is worse even than migraines, with symptoms including burning pain localised around one eye, swelling, and drooping, watering eyes.

Cluster headaches have no cure, but can be managed by avoiding triggers like alcohol, strong smelling substances, and smoking.
