Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall believes his old club is going to be in for a “tough year” this season.

The Hawks’ 2017 campaign got off to a wobbly start last weekend as they crashed to a 25-point loss against Essendon at the MCG.

Hawthorn have been a finals mainstay for many years now, but the Chief told Triple M’s Rush Hour that could all change this season.

“The challenge is ahead of them and it will be interesting to see what they can conjure up,” the Chief told The Midweek Rub.

“I’ve got them somewhere between sixth and 10th. If they have a good year, they can certainly play finals but if they lose a couple of players, or things don’t improve, they might find themselves just outside.

“They’re very well-coached and they’ve got a pretty strong culture there so it will be interesting to see how they cope with a little bit of adversity early on because they’ve got a tough first month.”

The third-greatest goalkicker in the history of the game agreed pace was a serious issue for the Hawks.

“There’s no doubt they aren’t in the top 10 or 12 clubs in the competition as far as leg speed goes,” Dunstall said.

“There is an ageing list to some degree and they’re trying to transition that.”
