Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall believes “it’s a blessing” that his former side have started the season so badly.

For the first time since 1998, the Hawks are 0-4 and are aiming to avoid their worst start to a season in 47 years when they face West Coast at the MCG on Sunday.

But “The Chief” sees it as a positive and will force the club to rebuild quicker than they might have.

“Then you don’t waste a year thinking, ‘Are we thereabouts? Can we do something?’,” Chief told Triple M’s Rush Hour on Wednesday during the Midweek Rub.

“I expected them to battle this year. Whether that was just inside the top eight or just outside of the eight. But it’s hit them a bit quicker, it’s not necessarily the worst thing that could happen.”

Hawthorn’s rebuild could be delayed somewhat due to the fact they traded away their first-round pick this year to St Kilda.

But Chief disagrees and has no issue with the fact that, as it stands, the Hawks won’t have a pick in the first round of the 2017 draft.

“Whether it (turns out to be) pick one or pick 15 makes no difference to me,” he said.

“They recruited two midfielders that are 23 years of age. You get six to eight years of the prime careers of Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara.

“No guarantee if you used draft picks that you’re going to unearth players like that.

“There have been plenty of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 picks over the last 15 years that have done nothing.”
