Jay Clark has said Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson is "in trouble" for his comments on the umpiring.

Clarkson had a subtle dig at the umpires for a controversial 50-metre penalty during Hawthorn's loss to Gold Coast.

Kaiden Brand conceded a 50-metre penalty for encroaching on the protected zone of a Ben Ainsworth set shot.

"The AFL have backed the call, it was the right call," Clark said on the Sunday Rub.

Clark says Clarkson is in trouble, particularly after Brad Scott and North Melbourne copped a collective $80,000 fine last year for umpiring comments.

"He's in trouble for those comments," he said.

"Remember the AFL fined Brad Scott, North Melbourne coach, $80,000 for sort of implying there was an umpiring bias against Lindsay Thomas for head ducking.

"The AFL have tried to give the coaches a little bit of leniency, they don't want to be seen to be fining coaches every week, but I've got absolutely no doubt he will get a please explain and potentially a fine for those comments."

Paul Roos said he believes Clarkson would almost have hoped he would have been asked about the umpires.

"I think you know what you're saying, and on the way down you're almost hoping that someone asks you about it," he said.

"I think he's in trouble. But I think part of would be, well I'm going to have a swing...he would have done that intentionally, I would think."
