Triple M's Jay Clark says he doesn't expect Steven Motlop to stay at the Cats beyond this season.

The Geelong star is a free agent, but Clarky suggests he might be heading interstate.

“I’m told that Port Adelaide are looking very hard at Steve Motlop, obviously (there’s) the connection there with Ken Hinkley,” he said on the Sunday Rub.

“I don’t expect Motlop to be at the Geelong footy club next season.”

Clarky said it gives the Cats some more freedom to go after Gary Ablett, with the club likely to receive a second-round compensation pick.

“It creates a bit cap space and obviously another pick to help with the Ablett situation,” he said.

“I think for his benefit, he’d be looking for a fresh start next year.”

Wayne Carey said it could work, given he finished runner up in Geelong’s best and fairest in 2015.

“That tells you what level he can reach,” he said on Triple M.

“He might need a fresh start for himself."
