The AFL are understood to be after a big name player to headline the first AFLX competition, according to Jay Clark.

Nat Fyfe is the player who the AFL are keen to get the signature of for the first edition

"Nat Fyfe has emerged as one of the key figures in this competition," Clark said on The Sunday Rub.

"The AFL wants the Brownlow Medallist to be the headline act of this.”

The inaugural AFLX competition is expected to take place in the pre-finals bye with players from non-finals teams to feature.

The 7-player-a-side revamped version of the game has been likened to the T20 format in cricket.

While the AFL are hunting a headlining player, the reaction from players and clubs has been "guarded".

"They are going to have to be well remunerated," Clark said.

Clark estimated that around a $10,000 asking price for each game would be required to get players to play, while Nathan Brown thought $50,000 was more reasonable.

Paul Roos said the risk of injury may be too great for clubs to allow their players to participate.

"I don't think you can do it with current players," Roos said.

"There is too much to lose from a club point of view."
