West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern says he broke his ribs during the Eagles’ premiership win over Collingwood.

McGovern came into the match under an injury cloud after copping a huge hit in the preliminary final against Melbourne, and came close to missing the grand final due to it.

McGovern tore his obliques — the muscles in his side — off the bone, and was urinating blood in the lead up to the game.

Doctors feared he’d done serious kidney damage.

“Early days it (the pain) was 10, throughout the week it was 10,” McGovern said in an interview with Paddy Sweeney for 9 News Perth.

“I probably played at about three, three or four depending on where and when I got hit… I probably didn’t think I was gonna play.”

McGovern needed six injections to get out on the MCG on grand final day, and syas he cracked his ribs during the grand final but doesn’t know when.

“I copped another couple of hits in the back, I cracked my other ribs,” he said.

“I don’t know what time of the game it was or whatever it was, but yeah I’ve ended up cracking those so that was great.

“You gotta love your footy!”

Despite being battered and bruised, McGovern played a pivotal part in the lead up to Dom Sheed’s famous match winning goal.
