West Coast premiership defender Jeremy McGovern wouldn't have played if the 2018 grand final was a home and away game, according to Adam Simpson.

McGovern, who had been battling a hip injury from the preliminary final against Melbourne, made a significant impact on grand final day with 14 disposals and nine marks.

But he wouldn't have played any other game, according to his coach.

“He was in hospital on Sunday. He had some internal bleeding. It was a special effort for him," Simpson said after the win.

"If it was home and away, he wouldn’t have played. If it was last week, he would have played.

"He plays sore a lot, so I’m not surprised.”
