St Kilda legend Leigh Montagna feels that the AFL shouldn’t reduce the interchange cap.

Potential rule changes have been a hot topic this season, with rumours of cap reduction and rules on where players have to be at centre bounces.

But Joey said that a reduced interchange cap may have the opposite effect to that intended.

“If players are more fatigued, people think the game will open up,” Joey said.

“I still think the coaches will instruct the players, or the players’ natural instinct will be to defend first.

“Your first point of call will be to still tackle, still get back and support your defence.

“If you’re fatigued, I don’t think you’ll have the energy to reset, to run forward.”

The comments came as part of a bigger discussion about potential rule changes, with Joey saying he doesn't mind the idea of starting positions.
