John Longmire has revealed Gary Rohan and Kurt Tippett will both play NEAFL this weekend, in order to get some footy under their belt.

Eyebrows might have been raised when Sydney released their teams on Friday, with the two listed as emergencies.

Both have been important parts of Sydney's side over the last few years.

Longmire said they were out of Sydney's 22 this week to get some fitness up.

"Gary and Kurt will play in the reserves to get some continuous football under their belt, both of them haven't played much football (in recent weeks)," Longmire told sydneyswans.com.au.

"They need to be able to get back in, play the game, run around, get some conditioning and some touch."

Longmire stressed that, although Sydney did aim to "pick (their) best team", the two just needed some more footy.

"We obviously pick the best team we think can give us the best chance of winning. The 22 that played last week obviously did the job for us," he said.

"While we're always looking forward to improve, in regard to those particular players we just felt the lack of match play they've had counted against them so they just need to play a bit more footy."
