Hawthorn ruckman Jon Ceglar will play his first game of football in 624 days this weekend.

Ceglar, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in round 22, 2016, is set to return to action this weekend via the VFL.

The 27-year-old was nearing full fitness in the pre-season before a back strain put his footy return on hold once again.

"He's looking great," Hawthorn director of high performance Andrew Russell said on Tuesday.

"He's excited, and we'll see him out there this week playing for Box Hill."

Hawthorn vice-captain Liam Shiels is also tipped to be fit for this weekend's clash with Essendon after a back injury.
