Josh Gibson has officially played his last game of AFL football after the decorated defender chose to forgo a farewell game.

The three-time premiership player called time on his career today after 225 games with North Melbourne and Hawthorn and declared that he didn’t want to take a game away from another player.

“As I said to the group, I’m not going to play again this year,” an emotional Gibson said on Tuesday afternoon.

“My body is just not 100 per cent. I just felt it wouldn’t be right for Clarko, the coaching staff and the match committee if I put them in the position of dropping someone for the last game to try and give me a farewell game.

“It’s not really what I’m after. I’ve had a great career and a lot of highlights in that time. One send-off game isn’t the be all and end all.
