Melbourne general manager of football Josh Mahoney has told Triple M Angus Brayshaw's omission from the side was due to his performance.

LISTEN TO MAHONEY EXPLAIN:

Brayshaw was one of Melbourne's surprise omissions in the opening weeks, with the former number three draft pick left out of Melbourne's side for the first three games.

After missing most of the 2017 season due to concussion, Brayshaw returned to the side late in the year and averaged 21 disposals over his last three games, as well as playing both JLT Series matches.

Despite that, Mahoney declared the omission was due to form.

"A lot of people are talking about Angus not playing," he told Triple M.

"You can't reward people who aren't performing at the level you want, and also you have to reward the guys that are.

"That's been how it has been. He's played some really solid footy over the last three weeks (and) he gets his opportunity.

"We want him in the team."
