Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has played down any injury speculation over star midfielder Robbie Gray.

Gray was withdrawn from the Power's clash with the Hawks, citing soreness.

But Hinkley has suggested it is no more than a precaution, wanting Gray fit and ready for round one.

"There's nothing wrong with Robbie for round one," he said on Triple M.

"He was a little bit sore at training yesterday and I said 'mate, you're not playing, there's no point'.

"He's really in a good spot, to be honest...he wants to play today.

Hinkley said the fitness of his players for round one far outweighed the importance of a final pre-season hit out.

"He is 100% honest. There is no chance I would take a risk with Robbie Gray because I need him in round one," he said.

"We are managing Robbie, we are managing Chad (Wingard), we're managing people that we have to manage and know they're really important for the long run."
