Lance Franklin has opened up on the injury that has limited his pre-season and prevented him from doing contact drills.

Franklin revealed he tore his anterior labrum late in the 2016 season - an injury he played through finals with.

The Swans star had surgery to repair the injury just after the grand final.

"Round 18 I actually hurt it at training, I went to tackle 'Laids' and hurt the back of my (shoulder) - the labrum, it's called," he told Sydney Swans Media.

"I had the surgery straight after the grand final, and everything has gone well from there."

Franklin says he is confident in his ability to stay fit despite not being able to return to full training.

"Although I can’t do any contact (drills), I’ve been able to run still which has been really good. I’m in a good position at the moment," he said.

"It's usually three months - I think it's just about three months now - so I’m nearly back to full contact, which is really good. I’m looking forward to getting out there amongst the boys, into full contact."

The 29-year-old is expected to return to full training in the coming weeks, and despite the interruption is aiming to play in the pre-season.
