St Kilda veteran Leigh Montagna gave up an utterly baffling 50 metre penalty in their game against Geelong at Etihad Stadium today.

With Geelong’s Mark Blicavs taking a free kick at the back of the centre square, Monty vented his frustration in the umpires’ general direction, shouting that it was a “soft bump”.

The umpire clearly heard something else, though, awarding a 50 metre penalty to the Cats’ defender Andrew Mackie (who'd received a handball) and telling Montagna he’d said “soft C”.

When Montagna told the ump what he really said, the umpire apologised if he got it wrong but didn’t change the decision.

“If I’ve gotten that wrong, I’m sorry,” the umpire said.

"You've cost us a 50!" Montagna replied.

Mackie goaled from the resultant free kick.
