Leigh Montagna chimed in on reports that St Kilda are interested in Sydney gut-runner Dan Hannebery, saying that “he is exactly the type of player" that his old club needs.

Whilst many in the media criticised the move by the Saints, Joey said on Dead Set Legends with Jay Clark that Hannebery still has plenty of good footy left in his body.

“I like it if St Kilda go down that path,” Montagna said.

“Hannebery is an All Australian, he’s a premiership player. Now yes this year he’s been injured... Since when does having an injury-riddled year write you off as a player when you’re only 27 years old?”

“I don’t mind it. I think he’s exactly the type of player that St Kilda need.”

Hannebery has battled injury and form issues this season, only playing 11 games so far — however, has been selected this week after missing the last month with a calf.

He is contracted at the Swans until the end of 2021 meaning the Saints will need to give up something to gain his services.
