GWS coach Leon Cameron has said Josh Kelly will be given time to make a decision on his next contract, but said he was "confident" Kelly will stay.

The star midfielder has received a whopping offer from North Melbourne - $9 million over nine years.

Cameron admitted discussions with Kelly will be "ongoing".

"It's going to be ongoing until either we sign him or it's put on hold," he said on Triple M.

"That's the reality of it all."

Cameron said the club has had a couple of serious chats with Kelly about the big deal.

"We have to deal with these things that come across our way. It's obviously quite unique, that sort of deal in front of him," he said.

"We can speak about it light-heartedly at times, but we've had a really good couple of serious chats (about it).

"He loves this footy club. This is a bit of a spanner in the works, but I'm confident that he wants to stay at our club."

Cameron said Kelly would catch up with his family this weekend, but the next couple of days wouldn't be crucial in the scheme of things.

"There's no doubt he's going to stay down and spend some time with his mum and dad and they're a great family," he said.

"I wouldn't say the next 48 hours are crucial...the next month is.

"From a club point of view we'd love to get it done within 48 hours, that'd be fantastic our way, but with such good kids like that, we'll give him time and hopefully he can make the decision and stay at the Giants."
