A game in Melbourne’s Northern Football League was abandoned today after a player was badly injured.

Heidelberg West were comfortably leading late Mernda in the third quarter of their Division 3 clash when one of their players was badly injured in a marking contest.

The injury was severe enough that an ambulance had to be called.

The umpires took the decision to call the match off at 3/4 time, awarding the win to West Heidelberg.

They led Mernda 14.9 (93) to 4.2 (26) at the time, having kicked the first nine goals of the day.
