Local footy player Dylan Taylor has been jailed for six months for punching an opposition player in a practice match earlier this year.

Taylor was playing for Corio when he threw a punch that broken Newcomb ruckman Tom Barber’s jaw in two places.

He copped an 18 week ban from the AFL Barwon tribunal, triggering an automatic deregistering.

He pleaded guilty in to recklessly causing serious injury in Geelong Magistrate’s Court today, and was sentenced to six months.

The match was abandoned after Taylor’s punch, with Barber found semiconscious and bleeding.

Barber had plates inserted on both sides of his jaw, along with six screws.

He couldn’t work and had to eat pureed food for six weeks, and missed the entire season.

Taylor had initially been offered a one-month jail term followed by a community corrections order, but opted to plead not guilty and fight charges.

However, he changed his mind and agreed to plead guilty last week.
