Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has spoken to the media following the news that high-profile forward Tom Boyd will be taking indefinite leave to deal with clinical depression.

The club granted Boyd a leave of absence while he receives treatment - and the premiership coach is confident he'll return to his best.

"Tom is optimistic he will be OK and he has a future in the game," Beveridge said to reporters today.

"As soon as we get on top of it, he'll come back into the program."

"For a period of time Tom has been grappling with this, and we've had conversations on how to juggle the external noise."

"We have great support mechanisms at the Club, we have a transparent approach. The players showed their full support."

"We're optimistic we'll have Tom back as a player at some point, but that is secondary."

"We can help & become stronger together."

The Bulldogs take on the Crows this Friday night at Adelaide Oval.
