Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has detailed why inside midfielder Tom Liberatore was not selected ahead of tonights clash with Sydney at the SCG.

Beveridge told Channel 7 before tonight's match that they want to reward players who are performing at VFL level and others warranted selection before Liberatore.

Beveridge was questioned how Libba was going and why he was not selected.

“Yeah he’s going okay, but last week Mitch Honeychurch was probably best on ground at VFL level, Toby (McLean) and Lukas Webb were probably our next best," he said.

“Libba was, he was okay, but we're rewarding performance and Tom will come back into the side at some point, but Toby comes up today."

Beveridge emphasised that performance is the key to all players being selected in the senior side and that playing well in the VFL is key to being promoted.

“If Mitch keeps playing like he did and Lukas does (as well) they will get their opportunity again."
