Triple M's Luke Darcy has defended former Bulldogs teammate Bob Murphy from criticism suggesting he took the glory of the Western Bulldogs' premiership celebrations last year.

The Footy Show panelist Sam Newman suggested Murphy didn't "let the players take the credit" for the win, by being there himself.

Darce suggested it was part of Sam's "theatre".

“I don’t take offence to Sam, because I understand that’s what he’s done for a long period of time, there is 90% theatre...that’s what he does,” he said on the Friday Huddle.

He said, though, that Murphy was in an "unwinnable position" and would have copped criticism whatever his response.

“No man would have been less reluctant to take any glory in that day than Robert Murphy. He could not have wanted to be there, that wasn’t a choice of his," he told Triple M.

"I thought the way he handled himself on that day was just spectacular, and it was the coach who decided that he needed to be up there.

“If he had have gone off in the corner - we’ve seen players do that on grand final day where they put the glasses on and crack the sads - everyone goes what a spoilt brat.

“He’s in the unwinnable position, and I thought he handled himself - as he has done his whole career - with great class."
