Former Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge admits "both parties are interested" in extending his career at Brisbane.

Hodge retired from Hawthorn at the end of the home and away season, but told Channel 7 on Wednesday night a future at Brisbane was on the cards.

He joined the grand final edition of The Footy Show on Thursday and said it's not official yet, but was "happy" for the discussions to play out.

"There's still a lot of things to work out, but I'm just happy that both sides are interested," he said.

"It's not official yet, both sides are interested, and I guess it's not (official) until either something happens at either (free agency) or the draft, but until then both parties are happy to talk."

He said Brisbane coach - and former Hawthorn general manager of football - Chris Fagan raised the idea recently.

"It happened fairly quickly, just as far as discussions (go)," he said.

"I've been in touch with 'Fages' a little bit, and he just asked the question if I want to go on and develop the younger guys at Brisbane.

"Being able to work with (Kaiden) Brand and (Ryan) Burton and (James) Sicily and (Blake) Hardwick, these kinds of guys, I really enjoyed it last year. I guess I enjoyed the coaching side of things last year, and he just wanted to see if I wanted to come up and develop that side of it as well."

Hodge said it won't change his love for Hawthorn, rather it's an extension of his passion for coaching.

"The decision to play against Hawthorn's a tough one. I left Hawthorn to retire, and then thinking about this is coming out of retirement. But the emotion, the passionate side of me with Hawthorn is always going to be there. I love the footy club, I went there at 17 and left an old man at 33," he said.

"But I guess it's this new phase of the coaching thing that's really appealing to me, and I guess the main priority is my family, making sure that they were comfortable moving up there, they were happy.

"What I've been able to achieve with the Hawthorn footy club is never going to change."
