Former Hawthorn champ and current Brisbane Lion Luke Hodge has revealed he was "willing" to join Gold Coast 12 months as part of the Jaeger O'Meara deal.

The Hawks landed O'Meara from the Suns during last year's trade period, with the Hawks giving up a bevy of draft picks.

Hodge revealed he and Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson were "willing to do" the trade, giving the Suns a senior player in return, but that the idea "got shut down".

"They [the Hawks] needed to get Jaeger and they needed a senior person," he told Channel 7.

"'Clarko' always says put the footy club first, so that's what we were willing to do, but that got shut down pretty quickly."

Despite his trade to Brisbane, Hodge knows he is always welcome back at Hawthorn.

"I think 'Clarko' and the footy club made it pretty clear at the B&F that 'Mitch' (Sam Mitchell) and myself would always be welcome back at the footy club," he said.

"He said 'why don't you play another year here'...but the reason why I finished playing at Hawthorn was the fact I didn't want to keep the younger guys out.

"Even when 'Clarko' said come back and play another year, I wasn't going to change my mind."
