Western Bulldogs defender Marcus Adams will be out for an extended period with a Lisfranc injury.

Adams did not return to the field after half time during the Dogs' loss to the Swans on Thursday night.

Scans later confirmed he had damaged the Lisfranc ligaments in his foot.

He has, however, dodged surgery.

“Scans have confirmed that he has suffered a moderate grade injury to the Lisfranc ligaments that form the supporting structure at the arch of his foot,” Western Bulldogs head physiotherapist Chris Bell said.

“After specialist opinion, he does not require surgery and we will put a conservative plan around his recovery."

The Western Bulldogs will reassess Adams' foot after six to eight weeks.

The club said they will be able to determine a time frame on his recovery after that.

“Marcus has been put in to a CAM boot to allow the ligament to heal, and we will reassess Marcus in the next 6-8 weeks," Bell said.

A Lisfranc injury typically takes a while to heal, with Matthew Egan and Dane Swan both retiring after injuring theirs.

Other AFL players such as Mitch Clark and Jarrod Pickett have had to deal with the injury in recent season.
