Melbourne forward Dean Kent will miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury.

Kent will undergo surgery on Tuesday on his left shoulder which he injured against Adelaide in Darwin in Round 17.

It’s a tough break for the 23-year-old with the Demons on the verge of breaking their 11-year finals drought this season.

“That’ll put him out for the rest of the year, but hopefully set him up for a good pre-season,” Elite performance manager Dave Misson said.

Kent has struggled for regular game time in 2017, having spent most of the season in the VFL.

But he got his chance in Round 16 against Carlton and held his spot for the following week against the Crows.

He only played six games this season for a career total of 58.
