Melbourne have become the latest side to turn their back on the re-recorded version of their club theme song.

The Demons confirmed on Wednesday that they would be using their original theme song, recorded by the Fable Singers, for season 2018.

It was revealed by Triple M Footy last week that the AFL had re-recorded 15 of the clubs’ songs, with the exception of Fremantle, GWS and Gold Coast.

The move provoked fierce public backlash, especially from fans of the Victorian clubs which are renowned for having their songs recorded by the legendary Fable Singers in 1972.

The popular songs have become part of the footy culture and fabric over nearly five decades.

Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs have also announced they won’t be using the re-recorded versions of their theme songs.

Sydney and Richmond are the only clubs at this stage who have confirmed they’ve opted to start using the re-recorded versions.

St Kilda and the Brisbane Lions are yet to make a decision.
