Melbourne tagger James Harmes says that Joel Selwood’s third quarter brain fade emphatically switched the momentum in the Dees’ favour in their big elimination final win over Geelong.

Harmes held Selwood well all night, and the Cats skipper’s frustration boiled over as Tom Hawkins lined up for a set shot midway through the third term.

Selwood was involved in an altercation with Harmes and Jake Melksham as he came to the bench, giving away a free kick for high contact as he wrestled Melksham.

The free kick meant Hawkins couldn’t take the set shot to cut the margin to 15 points.

"It definitely changed the momentum of the game I think, they were lining up for goal and coming," Harmes told AFL.com.au.

"It was a little bit of argy and bargy in one of the contests and a little bit of words between each other.

"I don't think there was too much in it.

“Melky got a free kick out of it so it worked out well."

The Dees win means that they will play Hawthorn for a spot in a preliminary final next Friday night.
