Melbourne football operations boss Josh Mahoney has played down the severity of Angus Brayshaw's concussion, saying he expects the young Demon to be fit to play next week.

Brayshaw suffered another concussion playing for Casey in the VFL last night.

Mahoney joined the Sunday Rub to explain the injury.

"He got kicked the ball and got hit after play, so he got a free kick down field," he said on Triple M.

"It was a reasonably significant hit."

Mahoney, however, said the concussion was only minor.

"It was a very minor concussion is the way our doctors would describe it, but there was enough there to rule him out for the second half of the game," he said.

"This morning he's only got a couple of symptoms still, so he's improved since the game."

It is Brayshaw's third concussion in the last year, after being concussed twice within a week last season.

Mahoney played down any suggestion the concussion was career-threatening, or linked to his previous knocks.

"We want to make sure everyone knows it is a minor concussion," he said.

"I understand that he has got a bit of a history last year having two concussions in quick succession, but some of the commentary around (it being) career-threatening is a bit of a dramatisation of his situation right now."

The club expect him to bounce back quickly.

"We'll treat it as an isolated incident," he said.

"Right now, speaking to our doctors this morning, he's progressing well. We expect him to be available for this week."
