Defender Michael Hartley has signed a new one-year deal that ties him to the club until the end of 2019 at least.

Hartley was a regular part of the Bombers’ line-up in his first two years at Tullamarine, playing 37 of a possible 45 games.

But with Cale Hooker moving back into defence this year, Hartley fell behind Hooker, Michael Hurley and Patrick Ambrose in the key backman pecking order, managing just four games – the last of which coming in round five.

However, when given the chance he has proven to be a very reliable performer and even kept Sydney superstar Lance Franklin goalless in 2017.

“It’s extremely exciting to be a part of this club at this time. We are a young up-and-coming group that will give the competition a good shake up next year,” Hartley said.

“I am excited to get stuck into pre-season and work on my consistency in playing good football for longer periods.

“I’m looking forward to a competitive season and pushing to play at senior level football again.”

After spending two years on Collingwood’s rookie list, Essendon picked him up with selection No.68 in the 2015 draft.

He has played 41 games for Essendon.
