Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe had his 2016 campaign cut short when he fractured his leg against Carlton in round five.

But should his season have really ended there and then?

According to Michael Roberts, it shouldn't have, with Robbo saying on Triple M Footy the Brownlow Medallist was ready and willing to return to football an entire month before the season ended.

"I was lucky enough to have a Christmas dinner with Matthew Pavlich...you mentioned Nat Fyfe, who's captaining (tonight) - he was ready to go with a month to go in the (2016) season," he revealed on Triple M.

"He wanted to play, but then Ross (Lyon) held him back."

The 25-year-old was officially ruled out for the year in May, two weeks after the injury.

But it sounds like it may have been premature.

"Don't forget he had a broken leg, he had screws, he had plate problems, and he didn't want to bust it again, but he was desperate to play," Roberts said.

"He wanted to play a month before the season ended."

Warren Tredrea defended the decision not to play Fyfe late last year.

"It's a smart move (not playing him), because you don't put your best asset and probalby one of the competition's best assets at risk," he said.

"Let's face it, it wasn't a broken leg - it was a back to back (broken leg), because remember the final the year before?

"That's just smart, because now he's had a good seven to eight months of building up into a pre-season."

Fyfe made a successful return in Fremantle's JLT Series match against West Coast, being the Dockers' leading ball winner with 22 disposals, 16 contested possessions and six clearances.
