Mick Malthouse caused a bit of a stir when he ranked his best 25 players of the last 50 years.

As part of a Herald Sun feature, Malthouse - among other experts - was invited to rank the best 25 players of the era.

And there are a couple of mighty omissions.

Malthouse's list does not contain either Gary Ablett snr or Gary Ablett jnr, an absence that certainly caused a stir online.

It was the only list that failed to contain both Abletts, and people certainly recognised it.

Despite this, Ablett snr finished fourth in the article's cumulative rankings, with Ablett jnr finishing sixth.

Leigh Matthews took out the gong at the best player of the era, with Wayne Carey second.

Malthouse also omitted long time Collingwood captain and his successor as Collingwood coach, Nathan Buckley.

Neither of the Abletts were even noted as being 'unlucky' by Malthouse, with Collingwood defender James Clement taking those honours.
