Mick Malthouse has explained his comments on women's footy that saw North Melbourne AFLW star Moana Hope walk out on a panel discussion in Ballarat yesterday, saying Hope "overreacted".

MALTHOUSE EXPLAINS:

Hope left a grand final function immediately after comments made by Malthouse regarding the women's game, saying she was "embarrassed, ashamed, humiliated and disgusted".

Malthouse reportedly said Aussie rules was a "man's game" at the event, where former Brisbane and Western Bulldogs star Jason Akermanis was also in attendance.

But he claimed Hope "overreacted" to the responses he gave.

"I wish that she had have listened to the questions," he told The Today Show.

"I don't like women's football in its current format. I think that we need to address the injury issues.

"I come from a family of a lot of women. My wife loves football, my two daughters love football and my granddaughters love football.

"I don't not like football. I don't like its present format...it worries me."
