Western Bulldogs midfielder Mitch Honeychurch is battling an infection that has seen him "in and out of hospital".

Honeychurch was a late withdrawal from the Bulldogs' side last weekend, and was not named for this weekend's clash with the Lions.

The 22-year-old had established his place in the side, playing six consecutive games between rounds 13 and 18.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said the midfielder was feeling really unwell.

"Mitch is still a bit crook, he hasn't returned (to the club) this week because he's really ill, so that's really unfortunate," he said on Friday.

"He's had an infection, been really crook and been in and out of hospital."

The Bulldogs coach suggested Honeychurch may take some time to recover.

"His energy is down, he's virtually got none, and it might take him a little while to recover, unfortunately," he said.

"He's not in at the club, he hasn't been in all week."
