A lot of debate has surrounded Dustin Martin’s Norm Smith Medal victory in the 2017 AFL Grand Final on Saturday.

His Richmond teammates Bachar Houli, Alex Rance, Jack Graham, Shane Edwards and Jack Riewoldt were all viewed as worthy winners of the award too, with many believing Houli and Rance, in particular, were unlucky not to be adjudged best on ground.

However, the factor that probably tipped it in Martin’s favour was the fact that he racked up 22 contested possessions which is the second biggest tally in a grand final since the stat started being recorded in 1999.

Only Triple M Footy’s Simon Black has registered more in a premiership decider than Martin (25) when he tore Collingwood apart in 2003 as he guided the Brisbane Lions to their third premiership in a row.

Martin also racked up a team-high 29 disposals and six clearances and also booted two goals.
