Nat Fyfe has had his one-match suspension upheld, leaving him ineligible for the Brownlow Medal.

After a deliberation that lasted more than 20 minutes, Fyfe was found to have intentionally struck Levi Greenwood.

Fyfe pleaded the contact on Greenwood was careless, rather than intentional, with his legal team citing previous cases where players had raised their forearms.

Fyfe said his arm was raised in self defence, to prevent him copping a high hit himself.

The AFL's legal counsel Jeff Gleeson QC argued a raised arm was usually conclusive proof of an intentional strike.
