The form of St Kilda’s number one pick Paddy McCartin has been a significant talking point this year, with the big forward spending plenty of time in the reserves with Sandringham Zebras in the VFL.

He’s played in the AFL side for the last three matches, however, and has worked his way into some form.

Triple M’s own Nathan Brown says that it’s time now for the Saints to bite the bullet and ensure that McCartin plays top-level footy every week.

“I really enjoyed Paddy McCartin, the way he worked,” Browny said on the Saturday Rub.

“He worked up the ground, didn’t get the ball always, but there’s something to work with in Paddy McCartin.

“I’d be just saying to him ‘I’m not gonna put you back to the twos, I’m just gonna play you every week.

“‘We might not play finals this year, but you need AFL football every week, you need the best defender and you just gotta work your backside off.’”

Browny is confident that McCartin will have a successful career.

“I think he’ll make it, I don’t think he’s a number one draft pick who’s gonna be a superstar like they thought,” he said.

“[But] I think he’ll have a good career in the AFL.”
