"It always comes back to bite you, doesn't it?"

It's that time of year when everyone tries to assess who's going to finish where.

And Triple M commentator Nathan Brown has thrown his predicted top eight into the mix, speaking during the Triple M coverage of Richmond and Adelaide's pre-season clash.

In reverse order...

8. Adelaide

"As I said before, I can't decide between Adelaide and St Kilda. I think St Kilda are going to be very, very good this year, but Adelaide have enough games at home to win enough games to get there."

7. Geelong

"I think they'll drop down just a little bit. I think they rely too heavily on Dangerfield and Selwood. They need improvement from elsewhere and I'm not sure where they're going to get it from this year.

"Where are the goals going to come from this year for the Cats? That's my big issue."

6. Hawthorn

"A lot of people are writing Hawthorn off, a lot of people think Hawthorn are going to drop down, but they're still going to play finals, and they're still going to be very good.

"Hawthorn could finish anywhere from third to sixth."

5. Melbourne

"Melbourne's draw is the easiest draw of any side in the competition. Their first 11 games they play Hawthorn, Geelong and Adelaide away in that time. The eight other games they can win.

"Melbourne are a big, big show if they can win some games early."

4. West Coast

"They were the form side going into the finals last year, and then they got belted by the Dogs who pulled one out of the bag and went on to win a premiership.

"Obviously not having (Nic) Naitanui for parts of the year is going hurt them, but I think West Coast play enough games at home to win enough games to finish top four."

3. Western Bulldogs

"I think they're going to be very good again - they've got a young side, the Dogs."

2. Sydney

"They'll be right up there again."

1. GWS

"They're just about unstoppable this year.

"They've got so many forwards, you add (Brett) Deledio to that mix who's been Richmond's best player for probably the last five years - I think GWS finish on top of the ladder. They are going to be unbelievably hard to stop.

"I hate to say it, but I think they'll win the flag."
