Dustin Martin has taken home the Gary Ayres Award as the best player of the 2017 finals series, alongside a Norm Smith Medal for best on ground in the grand final.

But that's not how either coach saw it.

Both Don Pyke and Damien Hardwick voted Martin second best on ground, behind Bachar Houli, who polled the maximum 10 votes.

Martin polled eight votes, with All-Australian defender Alex Rance polling six and Shane Edwards tallying four.

Vice-captain Jack Riewoldt and fifth-gamer Jack Graham shared one vote each.
