Teams will nominate a ruckman at each ball up to help umpires to enforce the new ‘third man up’ rule that is being introduced this year, new AFL umpires boss Peter Schwab has said.

Schwab suggested that nominated ruckman will likely be asked to raise their hands to indicate they’ll be contesting.

"We will ask them to nominate," Schwab said.

“Show of hands might be the easiest way and if they don't then the umpires are going to have to quickly say [you and you] like the old school yard."

Schwab did say there may be teething issues in interpreting the rules, especially when teams have two players nominate at the same time.

"We expect the clubs will be very helpful with us on that and we shouldn't have too many problems," Schwab said.
