Nick Riewoldt has praised the contest between Alex Rance and Lance Franklin, likening it to the clash between Nat Fyfe and Patrick Dangerfield in 2015.

The two went head to head, with it hyped pre-game as a showdown between the best defender and the best forward in the league.

It certainly delivered for Riewoldt.

"I just became absorbed with their one-on-one battle within the game," he said post-game on Triple M.

"It was like we saw with Fyfe and Dangerfield a few years ago in the midfield."

Brian Taylor agreed.

"One of the best one-on-one battles I've seen in a while," he said.

He gave Rance the three votes for best on ground, with the defender racking up 17 disposals in the second half and 10 in the last term, doing everything he could to halt Sydney.

"He had the job playing on the best player in the competition in Lance Franklin," he said.

"It's not often the three votes go to a player in the losing side, but I thought Alex Rance in his job today was fantastic.

"Richmond would have lost by five goals is it wasn't for Rance."
