Ex-Port Adelaide and Carlton player Nick Stevens appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today charged with perjury, according to News Corp.

It is alleged that he gave false evidence during a hearing for assaulting his ex-partner.

The new charge stems from a hearing in December 2014 when he was being prosecuted for assaulting his ex-partner Laima McKenna, when he allegedly told the Magistrates’ Court that he did not know woman named Samantha Nash.

Police now allege that is false after Nash gave a statement saying that she did know Stevens.

Furthermore, she will be excused from giving evidence in person because of ‘material’ sent to her by Stevens.

“The content of the material that has been sent by your client to Ms Nash means a remote facility is appropriate,” Magistrate Sarah Dawes said.

Stevens was jailed for three months with another three months suspended for the assaults on McKenna and ordered to complete a 12-month community corrections order including 90 hours of community service.

He was also fined $400.
