North Melbourne has confirmed Mason Wood will miss the start of the 2017 season.

Wood injured his hamstring during North Melbourne's main training session on Friday.

Scans confirmed the forward had suffered a hamstring strain.

"Mason will start his rehabilitation program straight away," North's general manager of football Cameron Joyce said.

"We're obviously hoping to have him available as quickly as possible but every step will be taken to ensure he can recover properly and then have an impact for us for the remainder of the year once he's cleared to play."

The 23-year-old was one of North Melbourne's most improved last season, playing eight games and kicking 12 goals before a knee injury cut his year short.
