Essendon forward Orazia Fantasia is likely to miss at least the first round of the 2018 season after undergoing a procedure on his knee.

Fantasia was suffering from friction in his knee, and the club’s medical staff decided the best option would be surgery.

“Orazio has recently had ITB friction that has been causing him knee pain and had a procedure today to address it,” Essendon Physical Performance Manager Justin Crow said on the club website.

“The intervention went to plan and following these procedures players usually take 3-4 weeks to recover.”

Fantasia was a revelation for the Bombers in 2017, kicking 39 goals from 20 games.

Essendon open their season in a game against Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Friday March 23.
