Hawthorn forward Paul Puopolo has signed a new one-year contract that ties him to the club until the end of next season at least.

Since being taken with pick No.66 in the 2010 draft as a mature-age recruit, Puopolo has played 166 games, including three premierships, and kicked 170 goals.

The 30-year-old has been in reasonable form this year, averaging 13 disposals a game and booting 19 goals. He’s also ranked fifth at the club for tackles.

Hawthorn football manager Graham Wright was thrilled with the re-signing.

“Paul has been a vital part of our side for a number of years now and we love the intensity he brings to the team,” Wright said.

“‘Poppy’ works as hard defensively as he does offensively, and that pressure is what makes him such an important player for us.

“Regardless of the opponent or game, you always know Poppy’s work rate will be there and we’re very happy to have him continue on in the brown and gold for season 2019.”
