Triple M Footy’s Paul Roos has rated Melbourne co-captain Jack Viney as the toughest player he ever coached.

Roos coached Sydney and Melbourne in 268 games over 12 seasons and some of the hardest players of the modern era were at his disposal, including the likes of Swans legends Paul Kelly and Brett Kirk.

But the 2005 premiership coach rated Viney as even more physical than those two champions.

“He’s as competitive and hard and tough and physical a player that I’ve coached,” Roos said of Viney on Triple M’s Rush Hour during The Midweek Rub.

“I think there’s always certain levels. It’s always the natural way you play, I mean Joel Selwood’s an inside player, Jack Viney’s an inside player.

“I think you can still be a hard outside player - Paul Kelly probably had more of a balanced inside-outside (game) and he was a marking player as well, whereas Jack at the moment, particularly when you’re coming back, is really around the footy the whole time so you see it (toughness) more than perhaps those other players.”
